Functional Medicine

Functional Medicine

Like Integrative Medicine, Functional Medicine focuses on a holistic perception of the individual. The difference is that Functional Medicine works to discover what causes disorder, dysfunction, and disease. It is based in the perspective that many health problems have an actual cause or series of events that stress the body so significantly that it can no longer function properly. When this occurs it is common to see a breakdown in the immune system, digestive system and nervous system, possibly resulting in the following:

  • Viruses, bacteria and fungi more easily take up residence. You may experience fatigue and feel as though you can’t shake the flu.
  • Your body may fail to break down food into life-sustaining nutrients, causing gas, bloating, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea or constipation.
  • The highly sensitive nervous system is easily disrupted by environmental toxins. When this occurs we may experience mood disorders and cognitive impairment such as depression, irritability, inattention and anxiety, as well as brain fog and insomnia.

These are some of the symptoms that occur when one is diagnosed with a chronic illness. As time goes on you may find yourself diagnosed with all too common conditions such as IBS, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome and infertility.

Functional Medicine targets the potential triggers of your health concerns using therapies, supplements and lifestyle interventions that restore inherent functions.

If you have been diagnosed with a chronic illness it is incumbent upon you to seek treatment that looks at root-cause resolutions to your problems
