WE SEE YOU.

You are more than your medical history.

You are your genetic composition, where you grew up, where you live now, what you eat every day, where you spend your time, what you do for a living, and so on.

In baking, ingredients + measurements are king. An extra cup of this, too little of that...and before you know it, the scent of disaster fills your kitchen. Disease is much the same.

Whatever the trigger - genetics, smoking, virus, place of origin, or lifestyle factors - the original insult sets off a chain reaction that may make a "fix" impossible. We're left with only the option to manage the consequence of this chain reaction by controlling symptoms.

But by backtracking to identify the initial molecular error, it becomes possible to correct the present outcome. Taking inventory of the full picture is Dr. Eileen Hamsa Henry's approach to medicine, and yes, to healing.

Dr. Henry's treatment protocol is focused on empowering the patient by utilizing investigative and cutting-edge modalities that "see" the whole person and identify the root cause of dysfunction or disease.

The simple fact is that your chronic pain might be a result of unknown food sensitivities. Your inability to manage your emotions might be attributable to undiagnosed digestive disorders. Environmental toxification might be the true source of your reproductive issues.

While treating disease addresses symptoms, correcting disease requires a holistic approach that integrates traditional + alternative medicine. Major medical centers such as The Cleveland Clinic have embraced protocols that marry traditional treatment to alternative medicine by employing innovative, cutting-edge methods.

Functional Medicine is technically defined as:

"medical practice or treatments that focus on optimal functioning of the body and its organs, usually involving systems of holistic or alternative medicine."

In laymen's terms, functional medicine is learning the whole person in order to achieve their best possible health. Often compared to Integrative Medicine, Functional Medicine is actually much more intensive and consequently, conclusive. While Integrative Medicine also focuses on the individual as a whole, Functional Medicine works to discover the root cause of any chronic condition from autoimmune or cardiovascular diseases to diabetes and obesity.

Functional Medicine

Like Integrative Medicine, Functional Medicine focuses on a holistic perception of the individual. The difference is that Functional Medicine works to discover what causes disorder, dysfunction, and disease. It is based in the perspective that many health
problems have an actual cause or series of events that stress the body so significantly that it can no longer function properly. When this occurs it is common to see a breakdown in the
immune system, digestive system and nervous system, possibly resulting in the following:

  •  Viruses, bacteria and fungi more easily take up residence. You may experience fatigue and feel as though you can’t shake the flu.
  • Your body may fail to break down food into life-sustaining nutrients, causing gas, bloating, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea or constipation.
  • The highly sensitive nervous system is easily disrupted by environmental toxins. When this occurs we may experience mood disorders and cognitive impairment such as depression, irritability, inattention and anxiety, as well as brain fog and insomnia.

These are some of the symptoms that occur when one is diagnosed with a chronic illness. As time goes on you may find yourself diagnosed with all too common conditions such as IBS, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome and infertility.

Functional Medicine targets the potential triggers of your health concerns using therapies, supplements and lifestyle interventions that restore inherent functions.

If you have been diagnosed with a chronic illness it is incumbent upon you to seek treatment that looks at root-cause resolutions to your problems.

Acupuncture works along the body's nerve and blood vessels to help promote the delivery of oxygen to internal organs in a somewhat mystical method that promotes self-healing. Studies have validated acupuncture's effectiveness, and the World Health Organization recommends acupuncture to treat 28 conditions and suggested it may have an effective therapeutic value for many more. Major medical centers that incorporate acupuncture into their wellness model include the University of California at Irvine, UCLA, and Houston's MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Among the conditions acupuncture is effective in treating:

  • Joint Pain/Back Pain/Neck Pain
  • Nausea
  • Headaches/Migraines
  • Anxiety/Depression/PTSD
  • Osteoarthritis
  • PMS/PCOS/Dysmenorrhea/Infertility
  • Male Sexual Dysfunction
  • Chemical Dependence
  • The effects of Aging
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Insomnia
  • Asthma
  • Chronic Fatigue
The effectiveness of acupuncture to regulate the body’s immune system, reduce inflammation and promote homeostasis has been proven again and again in modern medicine. This is why universities and medical centers routinely incorporate acupuncture as a foundation of wellness.

Aging is a personal journey that differs by individual.

Some of us embrace and celebrate maturation; some of us battle it. Regardless of visceral reaction to the changes age invites, everyone wants to look and feel their best, and get the most out of their life.

"Anti-aging" is a frequently used term.

"Healthy Aging" is a better one.

While there are many Functional and Energy medicine modalities that identify and treat neurological concerns, some are surprised at the pervasive connection between the brain and the "gut", otherwise known as the intestinal system and the liver. Even a condition as seemingly disparate as a mood disorder can be attributed to inflammation originating in the gut.

Identifying gut-based abnormalities speaks to neurological issues, and vice versa, and the intricacy of the Brain-Gut Connection drives home how tremendously useful a holistic, personalized approach is to medical and mental healthcare.

Our social and cultural focus on food, food quality, and diet choices is greater than ever, and so much of this can be attributed to the effects of what and how we eat on our digestive systems. Common gastrointestinal disorders include frequent heartburn/GERD, Irritable Bowel Disorder/Syndrome (IBD/S), Crohn's Disease, chronic constipation, weight gain, and bloating.

Many of us are on countless antacids and other prescriptions solely to manage the symptoms of stomach concerns, without a full knowledge of food sensitivities and allergies that may contribute to chronic gastrointestinal disturbance. Taking a comprehensive account of a person's lifestyle, genetics, and other personalized factors to comprise a customized health profile is one of the attributes of Functional and Energy Medicine to digestive wellness.

If you had a bad tooth that was causing a headache, would you continue to take pain relievers to relieve the headache or would you address the tooth? Most of us find the latter to be far wiser.

As the US faces down a dire opioid crisis, we're reminded of a vast population actually living with "Chronic Pain", otherwise classified as a severe, oft-inexplicable discomfort that lasts beyond 12 weeks. Traditional medicine defines Chronic Pain as a condition that can be treated but not cured. Functional Medicine becomes essential then to the Chronic Pain sufferer, because of the work done to identify and heal the source of the pain, not simply treat the manifestation.

The seasons of life require incredibly diverse health considerations, and this is especially true for women. The myriad of female-specific reproductive concerns, including but not limited to the effects of aging, can source extreme anxiety. Functional Medicine's holistic, thorough approach to wellness is especially useful for addressing hormonal irregularities and other root causes of disease, discomfort and/or disorders.
